Meeting people…
Wednesday, September 12th, 2007Do you know who the person sitting next to you is? no? well find out!
I was riding the bus this morning with a book in my hand, ready to read it on the way to work. I thought it would be a nice read, save me from the tedium of the ride and keep me distracted from the gloomy skies that lay above.
I opened the book and began to read the first few pages, when it dawned on me that since i’m new in this city, with it being only my 4th day living alone, that I should be meeting people rather than staring at these half blackened pages of a book, a good book nonetheless, but now wasn’t the time for it.
I looked all around the bus and saw people staring out the window, staring straight ahead, had their headphones on, while one person fell asleep , and would no doubt miss his stop. I started to wonder, since I bet atleast half of these people are bored on their ride to work everyday, taking the same routes, seeing the same faces, why weren’t they talking to each other, or atleast giving the person next to them a quick smile.
I knew I was doing the same thing by keeping my head buried in my book, so I closed the book, looked up, and said hi with a nice smile to the person sitting in front of me, do you know what their reaction was? their face lit up, I thought I had just plugged in a christmas tree! I started chatting to that person for a while until I had to get off at my stop. It was interesting getting to know a little bit about them, all the while making sure I kept a smile on their face. I dont think I let this person lose that smile even for a second for as long as the bus ride was.
After I had gotten off, I wondered just how much of a difference I made in this persons day today. I’m sure they must have had a nicer day at work, atleast I hope so, seeing as I left them a little happier and cheerful that morning rather than them just walking into work half awake and half asleep not really looking forward to their day.
Who knows? Maybe this person will have some better opportunities that day because of their more cheerful outlook, you never know what a small “hi” and a warm smile can do for a person. I’m glad to know that I atleast did something nice for a person. I hope I can keep this up, and I hope this story will inspire you to do the same thing every once in a while.
Have a nice day ![]()
